Viral marketing has an array of possibilities and ways to achieve your overall goals. However, just like everything else, preplanning and the right setup to create success are the things you will need to make it work for you and your e-business.

Spamming is still used widely, but with the government establishing more restrictions and fines you don’t want this to be a problem for you. The proper way to handle email permission is to first let your customer know that you will not transmit their e-mail addresses to third party companies. The next thing to do is to attach the need for their e-mail addresses to benefits they can receive.

For example: Coupons or discounts that are only available to members who receive e-mail notifications. With each e-mail you send the viral marketing effect takes place.

Here are six ideas to help you start your viral marketing campaign:

1. Purchase the branding rights to a viral E-book. Allow people to give away your free E-book to their visitors. Then, their visitors will also give it away. This will just continue to spread your ad all over the Internet.

2. If you have the ability to set up a forum or other bulletin board, you really have a great tool. Allow people to use your online discussion board for their own website. Some people don't have one. Just include your banner ad at the top of the board.

3. Do you have a knack for web design? Create some templates, graphics, etc. and upload them to your site. Then, allow people to give away your free web design graphics, fonts, templates, etc. Just include your ad on them or require people to link directly to your web site. Make sure that you include a link back to your site in the copyright notice and require them to keep your copyright notice in tact.

4. Write an E-book. Allow people to place an advertisement in your free E-book if, in exchange, they give away the E-book to their web visitors or E-zine subscribers.

5. Write articles that pertain to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their E-zine, newsletter, magazine or E-books. Include your resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom of each article.

6. You can easily find products on the Internet that will sell you a license allowing you to distribute the product free of charge to other people. Look for those products that provide "branding rights". That is where you can include your own name, website, and contact information

3 Steps to Find “Freebies” to Add to Your E-book
Those of us who regularly shop online are familiar with the array of free gifts, free bonuses and just plain freebies that are offered to a visitor to a website to encourage them to buy. How could you collect, select and offer free gifts, which will be valued as much as the original merchandise that is being purchased, put these gifts together and add them to your E-book? There are just three steps to do that very thing. They are:
1. Identify your key words in each chapter of your E-book. Now, type those words into your favorite search engine. You are looking for free E-books on the same subject in more depth, by a greater expert than you are, or by someone who gives a new and fresh angle to the topic. Add a link to the free E-book in each chapter of your E-book.
2. Research the Internet for related free gifts. Now you are looking for things that you could give as free gifts in your E-book that will make it more appealing and give it more pass-along appeal to your readers. For example: If you are selling gardening supplies, find a planting guide on the web that can be downloaded and include that as a gift in your E-book.
3. Download the freebies. Visit the freebies pages on those web sites. Most sites have freebies and encourage you to distribute them.
Other key words I searched for are freebies, free E-books, and free reports and then gave the key word that I wanted the free stuff for. Like… “freebies for gardeners”.
Give your reader the vest that you can offer. Give them your book, additional reading material and free gifts to boot. Everybody loves a bargain!

I did mention a few posts ago that you need to provide unique value to your users to expect anything out of your blogging efforts. When you think about it, there are millions of blogs out there that are trying to get some traction in the huge World Wide Web. But this is where the 99-1 rule applies. Essentially, 99 percent of useful content is generated by less than 1% of sites on the web. The other 99% of people talk about things that are either not unique or provide no value at all to readers. So if you want ot have any success on the web, you will want to think about how you are going to make yourself unique to your audience.

I did mention that usually diary blogs don’t work that well (read the book “nobody wants to know what you had for lunch”). But the truth of the matter is that a few insanely popular bloggers have pulled of such feat. You may ask, “what is it that makes these guys successful in such a tough blogging vertical.” Again, it all comes down to being unique enough and provide value to your readers. Here is how you can pull off a diary blog:

Know your target audience: we are all very unique with very unique life experiences. But if you think about it, a lot of us have somewhat similar life stories and experiences. Everyone has had that minor car accident or that embarrassing birthday party experience. The key for a blogger’s success is to connect with readers through their experiences. Not everyone’s going to have the same experiences as you do, but for those who have had similar encounters, your blog can help them get over embarrassing moments or deal with awkward situations. Connecting with your audience is key!
Target a problem: these days, you can provide a lot of value by providing everyday solutions to people’s problems. One way to do that is by using your diary blog to address issues that you have personally faced and solved. For instance, if you have just divorced your husband, you can talk about how you have gotten over your marital issues, or how you are planning to move forward. You’d be surprised how effective this approach is in bringing people to your blog time and time again.
Inspire people: if you have had a unique life experience that you can use to inspire people, you are golden. If you are a cancer survivor or you are a war veteran, your insights can be extremely appealing to a wide range of people. Not only can you provide people with your valuable life experiences, you can also inspire them to do more and maybe even join you for a good cause. Now that’s what a successful blog is all about.
Add a spin to your story: So what if you are not Lance Armstrong or John Mccain. Does that mean that you don’t have a good story to tell your audience? Every life story is unique and can help someone out with their situations. But you need to make sure you add a spin to your life story and make it more interesting by adding humor and other ingredients to it. No life is boring, I can tell you that.
Pulling off a diary blog is one of the hardest thing to do if you don’t have an inspiring story to tell. I often recommend people focus on other types of blogs before getting into this vertical. But if you feel you have a set of experiences that can help a lot of people out, then you might as well take on this challenge. It is a very rewarding experience to be able to share your life story with others on your blog and keep them coming back for more.

comments from real people (everyone gets spam
comments though).

That's enough about me, let's talk about your blog.

HOW TO CONVINCE PEOPLE TO LEAVE COMMENTS

Let me set something straight right now.

If your blog has no traffic you will not receive
any comments.

It makes sense of course, but some people don't
see the connection between these two elements.

If no one is reading your blog then no one will
leave comments either. Simply posting great
articles to your blog is not enough - you have to
*market* your blog to bring people to it.

We will talk A LOT about marketing throughout my
newsletter, so stay tuned for that.

For now, understand if you don't receive any
comments to your blog it's probably not that your
content is bad or people don't like you, it's
because you simply don't have enough traffic.

If on the other hand you do have some traffic, yet
no one replies to your posts, there are ways to
stimulate comments.

Try these tips to begin with -

- Write articles that reference or focus on other
bloggers. You will get their attention that way
and there's a good chance they will come to your
blog and leave a comment as a result.

- Ask your readers a question at the end of your
article.

- Write about topics that stimulate conversation,
such as current events (think politics, news,
entertainment).

- Be controversial with your writing. Have a
strong opinion and others with strong opinions
will reply to argue or agree with you.

- Be patient. Sometimes you just have to wait
until the first person leaves a comment which
opens the floodgates.

KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING

A while ago I stopped actively responding to
comments on my blog unless I was asked a direct
question. I really had no excuse for not doing it,
I was just lazy and working on other writing
projects. Consequently the average number of
comments on my blog entries dropped A LOT.

I noticed the regular commentators stopped
commenting as frequently and most conversations on
my blog ended very quickly.

This is really tragic for a blog and I'll tell
you why - it reduces your "Social Proof".

Social Proof is when humans take action or make a
decision based on seeing other humans doing it
first. It's sort of like an implied recommendation
- if other people do it, it must be good.

It's like when you see a bunch of people all
looking up at something in the sky at the same
time. You can't help but turn your head skywards
and see what all the fuss is about.

When first time visitors to your blog see other
people making lots of comments they are more
likely to decide there is something valuable at
your blog and bookmark or subscribe to it and may
even make a comment.

This is good for blog traffic. This is social
proof in action.

I was very conscious of always taking part in
comment conversations at my blog and consequently
my readership was growing in leaps and bounds. I
stopped and I noticed I hit a wall and my blog
didn't grow quite as well as it was.

I know a blogger who has a rule - she responds to
every single comment made to her blog.

Consequently she has developed a fantastic
community around her blog and her traffic has
skyrocketed in a short period of time.

Remember, comments on your blog are very
important, take the time to respond to them.

NINE TYPES OF BLOGGERS (slightly adapted from Collis’ 9 Essential Posts Every Blogger Should Know About, thanks, Lucas):

1. Speedlinker: Roundups, Comments, Trackbacks, etc of interesting posts. E.g. Problogger.com
2. Quoter: Blockquoting an interesting point of view, extract or news snippet and add a short bit of opinion and sourcing information. E.g. Susan Mernet’s “Quote of the Day”.
3. Entertainer: Amusing video, cartoon, image or joke. E.g. CartoonStock.com, BLaugh.com
4. Questioner: On-topic, interesting and conversation generating question. Insightful and interactive.
5. Updater: Ongoing project statistics or status.
6. Newsreader: Interesting news from press releases or grapevine. E.g. TechCrunch.com
7. Recycler: Dragging out some old goodies from the archives and reposting them for your new readers. (Collis didn’t have any example here, so I’ve added one. This “recycler” is a good online friend of mine. Her blog, a model for me at one point, also contains other types of posts.)
8. Guest-Poster: Your guest gets an extra plug, you get a day off and your readers get some variety.
9. Announcer: Own local blog news, short and sweet. E.g. what you plan to do, a new competition, reset of top commenters.

Some tips from others

1. Write Quality Content

Quality content is the key to a money-spinning blog. Good content brings more visitors for your writings from search engines. Visitors and members of the site read more and more of your writings if they find them interesting and informative. Google content also generates those ads which have more value per click. As a result you get more advertisement money.

2. Write Comments

When you read artciles or writings of others and write comments on them you get more visitors to your blog. Others writers respond positively by reading your writings and making comments on them. It also increases your earnings. Do not forget to give a link of your blog in comment box. It can be written in signature box by going to your account, and hitting Edit.

Whenever there is a comment on your article it is in the 'Last Viewed' for some time, getting more readers for you.

3. Invite Your Friends on This Site

When you log in you will see a link: Invite a friend. Hit this link and send emails to invite your friends on this site. The more friends you bring the more your blog will be read. You will also gain points for it. It will definitely increase your earnings.

4. Submit Short Articles Daily

Although you may paste long articles yet short articles are read more on internet. Write one or two short articles daily to submit in your blog. You can write on any topic you like. Your writing will be published immediately without rejection, or cut from the editor. But be careful that you do not violate the terms and conditions. Try to submit good material.

5. Submitting Same Matter on other Sites

You may use your matter at other sites as you have the copyright of your posts. Please change the heading and bring little changes in the content. By this way you may earn more.

6. So it is Hard-work in the Beginning

There is no magic method. For several months you have to work very hard to help your blog to start earning money. After that you can go easy and your blog will become your life-long earning partner. It will earn even if you work less or do not work at all. Good content will always be there in our database making advertisement and referral money for you.

Make your content give people a plan of action on how to do certain things, may be how to cook your native dish, how and where to download a certain software free, how to give your blog that professional touch, how to make that guy or girl love you forever, how not to be an host, etc. You got to speak authoritatively here if you intend to keep your audience coming again. One note of warning! You must be real.
